NCCC Cleans Up the Red River

AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team Maple 3 is hard at work in Fargo, North Dakota. The team is working with their sponsor River Keepers while staying at a city owned house.
The NCCC team’s main task is invasive species removal by the Red River. Trees such as buckthorn, box elders, as well as other weeds are taken out with chainsaws, pole saws and smaller tools.

Cedar Three Assists Home Sweet Home Ministries

NCCC team Cedar Three has been working with Home Sweet Home Ministries in Bloomington, Ill. from July 16 to August 10. Home Sweet Home is a faith-based non-profit organization that offers shelter to the homeless in the Bloomington-Normal area of Illinois as well as free meals to those in need. The ministry houses more than 100 people in their shelter.

Chelsea Schminke Wins Top Banners in State Fair Chester White Show
Chelsea Schminke of Van Horne captured the Champion and Reserve Champion Boar banners at the Chester White Swine Show judged Thursday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
Champion Gilt honors were awarded to Randy and Becky Schmidt of Williamsburg, while Bradly Hall of Alden won Reserve Champion Gilt honors. The Premier Exhibitor title was awarded to Tom Olson of Keswick.
Olson Spot Farm of Newhall claimed the Premier Exhibitor Awar at Iowa State Fair
Niehaus and Feldman Genetics of Greene took top honors at the Spotted Swine Show judged Thursday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. The Greene farm was awarded the Champion Gilt and Reserve Champion Boar banners.
Champion Boar honors went to Joy Genetics of Dunbar, Neb., while the Reserve Champion Gilt banner went to Peyton and Logan Schmitt, Nichols.
Schulte Bros, Watkins place Herdsmanship at the Iowa State Fair
Ja Glo Jerseys of Central City earned the Herdsman Award on Saturday at the conclusion of the dairy cattle show at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
The Herdsman Award recognizes the top exhibitors and ranks them based on the cleanliness of stalls, animals and aisles in the Boulevard of Dairy Breeds as well as the upkeep and sanitation of equipment over the course of the dairy shows.
Oak 4 NCCC members work with wildlife in Spearfish, S.D.
Oak 4 has been working at the Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Spearfish, S.D. The weekend of their arrival, a wildfire ravaged over 18,000 acres of the western portion of the state of South Dakota while firefighters across the state fought tirelessly to control the blaze. Fires covered as much as 9,000 acres total, despite some overnight rain storms.
4th Street Diner News
The 4th Street Diner meal on Sunday, August 26th will be Roast Turkey, Mashed Potatoes/Gravy, Broccoli, Mixed Green Salad, Blushing Pears, Cake, WW Bread, Milk.
On Monday, July 23rd, the afternoon activity was a Pepper Card Party. There were 5 tables of players. Patty McKenna won 1st place with 262 points. Don Selken won 2nd place with 261 points.
VS FFA members earn honors at Career Development events
This past June, some of our Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter members participated in going to state for four different carer development events. The first CDE that took place was our Ag Foods team. The team was made up of Jessica Dickerson, Stephanie Auen, and Tiffany Auen. They competed at ISU on June 7th. Their team received a silver award over all.
